As posted previously, the NZ institute has put together a ginger group) including Rod to look at the issues surrounding broadband infrastructure in New Zealand.

Their draft report has just been released. I’ve given it a quick read – some of the figures used in terms of potential benefits from a high speed broadband network are fairly off-the-cuff, but then again there are some valid comparisons with some of our international trading partners.

The main recommendation of the draft report is that;

“The appropriate aspiration is for New Zealand to commit to delivering high speed broadband through FTTP to at least 75% of the population within a decade.”

Interestingly, and in a change from the current thinking, the report calls for a move from the aspiration of saturated mid-level broadband, to targeted (and incrementally increasing) very-high speed broadband (ie fibre)

I wonder how Federated Farmers will react to the report….
