• T-Shirt Friday #16 – Glue

Everyone knows that professional conference goers like myself attend events not to listen to presentations, not to network but to collect schwag. Over the past couple of years I’ve done fairly well collecting tech t-shirts and I decided to create a weekly series critiquing tech companies t-shirt offerings in the expectation that a company with a great t-shirt is a prime candidate to have a great product also. Click here to see the series.

If you’d like your t-shirt reviewed, flick me an email to arrange things. The judges decision is, of course, final and very little correspondence will be entered into (perhaps).

DSCF5109 Glue isn’t a tech company, rather it’s a conference (and a very cool one at that) organized by the same people who do Defrag every November. Unusually for a shirt giveaway, the Glue attendee shirt is a long sleeve crew neck in dark gray. The conference is cool but the shirts aren’t so much (sorry Eric) – the logo is a little gaudy, the fabric is partially synthetic (sacre bleu!) and the byline on the back is questionable.

    Hot

    • It was free! DSCF5110
    • My wife wears it to bed in wintertime

    Not

    • 50% synthetic – killing the world one thread at a time
    • The logo is a little over the top
    • Made in Haiti… where the water runs hot (as in Geiger hot)

DSCF5081 Membership has its privileges and for me this meant being sent one of the first run of the new look Zendesk t-shirts (and yup – my kids got one each). Interestingly enough this run, while still made by GMTee, has moved to a much more subdued Khaki than the previous super-bright lime color.

    Hot     DSCF5082

    • It may not be tantric, but having a Buddha on your chest is the next best thing
    • Heavy weight, high quality cotton
    • The cool labeling (including a screeprinted care label – wow)
    • The Zendesk meetups are legendary!

    Not

    • Probably not the think to be worn in Iran (or some mid-Western US states for that matter)
    • Made in Honduras – what ever happened to first world manufacture?

DSCF5104 I was meant to go running with one of the guys from Financial Content during the Web 2.0 expo this year. Sore legs precluded that from happening but instead I went to their launch party and scored one of their t-shirts. This white crew neck is from a reputable brand (Fruit of the Loom) but alas continues the trend of being manufactured ina  low-cost economy.

    Hot

    • The Financial Content guy was really friendly
    • It’s great for the end of the week when clean laundry is scarce
    • No logo on the back – at least it’s half subtle

    Not

    • Meh – it’s just a shirt
    • Financial content? I mean the name’s not exactly sexy is it?
    • Made in Honduras – what ever happened to first world manufacture?

DSCF5100 FreshBooks are a cool company (I’ve got a soft spot for Canadians). I moderated a panel at the Office 2.0 Conference in 2008 and Sunir Shah, Chief Handshaker for FreshBooks was a panelist – part of the blood money for going easy on him (actually he went easy on me) was a genuine FreshBooks T shirt. A left-of-centre white crew neck, the FB shirt is cool, but I have difficulty finding places where it would be appropriate to wear it.

      Hot   DSCF5101

    • The printed tie on the front is quirky and makes a statement
    • It’s great when all my other clothes are in the wash (?)

    Not

    • The rear logo is perhaps a little too big for a general purpose shirt
    • I’m not quite confident enough to wear a shirt with a printed necktie on it in public

DSCF5098I like box.net, they’re a quirky company and this t-shirt (and the associated campaign against Microsoft SharePoint) is an example of that quirkiness. While not a wear-while-out-in-public kind of a garment, this crew neck is guaranteed to raise the heckles when worn in the vicinity of Redmond! The box.net T shirts are by American Apparel and that brings a huge amount of first world manufacturing credibility…

      Hot

    • You gotta give ‘em credit for cheekinessDSCF5099
    • Nicely integrated marketing campaign
    • American Apparel shirts – very very cool

    Not

    • You wouldn’t really wear it in public
    • If you did wear it in public people might be confused by the rear text (Freudian slip anyone?)

I have to confess that my Kapow t-shirt was a snatch and grab. I normally spend a little bit of time finding out about the company whose t-shirt I’m pilfering but all I know about Kapow is that they promise you’ll “be smarter sooner” (and I don’t think it’s a herbal drink).

    DSCF5094 Hot

    • Hmmm – it’s great to use when cleaning the car DSCF5095
    • The use of the geometric shapes fron and rear is kind of cool

    Not

    • Made in Haiti – propping up a dictatorship
    • No url – what does Kapow actually do?

DSCF5092 Idealog is a New Zealand magazine (both print and online) that’s New Zealand’s best business magazine. I write for idealog, both print and online and always enjoy a banter with their expansive twitter personage(s). The Idealog crew neck is an organic cotton creation with a massive front print.

    • I’m just not sure about that front print

DSCF5090I always catch up with the Atlassian crew when I’m in the US – they’re a cool company (even cooler coming from just over the ditch from my in Sydney). I picked this shirt up at the Enterprise 2.0 conference in Boston a couple of months ago. The Atlassian crew is an example of a byline done right “Stop, Collaborate and Listen” sums up what Atlassian is all about to a T (pun intended).
