November 28/29 will see Auckland hosting the Digital Future Summit. The organisers say;

“What is the changing economic, community, environment and cultural landscape in New Zealand and how do we maximise ‘being digital’ to address the challenges?”

The goal of the Digital Strategy is to enable a New Zealand-owned plan of action for our Digital Future.

Other key themes include:

  • Affordable, fast broadband for all New Zealanders
  • ICT driving productivity and wealth creation
  • ICT skills and capability – education and life long learning
  • NZ community content – strengthening communities
  • Sustainable NZ – ICT supporting a sustainable economy and harnessing New Zealand’s uniqueness

Sounds interesting – in principle I agree with the concept – so long as private industry can grasp it and run. All too often these things turn into Government group-speak.

Anyone out there intending to attend?

  • definitely interesting but hard to justify, as you say it could easily turn into a talkfest, did someone say ‘knowledge Wave’… it says its going to be webcast live so maybe we should set-up a Christchurch viewing, with a judging panel to score its performance into the blogosphere as it occurs.. real time heckling could be fun!

  • I’m keen if you are Grant – The Christchurch Virtual Future Symposium perhaps? Maybe Traderunner could sponsor a few beers and peanuts?

  • I think it’s an important event and I’d love to be there! But at 900 bucks a pop plus airfares and accomodation, it’s looking like a big ask. I can’t see too many grassroots community groups stumping up for that kind of dosh either. They need to put up some “wildcard” sponsorships and get a few creative people along. Otherwise its basically going to end up being a TUANZ benefit with a telco bunfight as the main act. That kind of misses the point because it’s supposed to be about content and not just networks.

    However, I will be looking out for the webcasts (hopefully they will utilise the high speed research network and make sessions available through the university grid computing centres)

  • Hey there telcos – Paul and I will attend the event if you stump up for our entry fees – it’ll be worth your while……
