So I decided that, being a bit of an early adopter, a move to naked DSL with VoIP was in order.
I dutifully purchased my PAP2T (to convert VoIP to a standard phone) and filled in my application form for WorldxChange’s fusion service (Naked DSL, VoIP combo for $70/month).
Horrors – it seems that my current provider (Telstra) refuses to allow porting of numbers to WorldxChange.
Two quick points from this;
- Everyone is quick to lambast Telecom but WorlxChange advises me that Telecom ports numbers to them with no problems
- Whatever happened to easy, ubiquitous and customer focused naked DSL in this country
The folks at WorldxChange were helpful – seems my best option is to port back to Telecom for a week then port over to WorldxChange from there – it’s a solution which would work but it’s exceptionally clunky and, let’s face it, a barrier to disruption.
Brickbats to Telstra and a bouquest to Telecom on this one I reckon!
Ben,
I work for TelstraClear, but I am certainly not an expert on porting. (I am on the internet and broadband side.) However, this sounded strange so I checked with some of the people in this area. There should be nothing stopping you from porting to WorldxChange. As a matter of fact we are obligated to allow porting out of any number by the LNMP determination.
Who says you cannot port out, TelstraClear or WorldxChange?
Olof – cheers for your reply. WorldxChange told me that Telstra is proving difficult and is not yet prepared to port numbers to them – if anyone at your end could help we’d appreciate it
I’ll inquire tomorrow morning and get back to you.
Ben,
Can you please contact me via e-mail so that we can resolve this offline? Thanks! Got further info for you + some questions.
Just an update – Olof from TelstraClear has been excellent helping me out with this – it would seem that the issue is in fact with Telecom, not TelstraClear
I’d love to get to the bottom of it but unfortunately there seems to be quite a lot of smoke and mirrors going on

Did you end up getting ported ok?
I’m considering making the move, but only if I can port my Telstra number hassle free.
Yup…. eventually…
