I think for those in the menaial service areas For people who work without contracts, yes it happens especially in the service industry, without sick leave, joining a union can give them some much needed rights and security. i do however think sometimes unions need to get their heads out of their arses I think that unions still have their place in society.

Depending on the nature of the disciplinary procedures, they are walking a path straight the the employment court. You can't legally discriminate against someone for their political leanings, regardless of where your company might side itself. That having been said, it seems odd that Mr. Tan should be a union member when his political leanings are so far to the right.
