In an interesting reverse twist to Moore’s Law, articles have recently bought to our attention the potential speed degradation of the internet after 2010. Articles here and here discuss this issue in depth.

The unreasonable men posted here about the issue. They rightly raise an interesting point;

It’s an interesting paradox. Many governments and markets have regulated Telco’s to a point where they are really under the hammer financially. And now, they are being asked to fund an internet up-grade of immense proportions so that the internet (which effectively ‘ate their lunch’) can continue to work as well as it currently does.

UM goes on to ask their readership whether they are alarmed about the scenario and their thought on what it might do to the viability or otherwise of SaaS.

My comment (and call me a denier, or at least an avoider – you may) is this – the internet is too important for anyone to let it be degraded. In the same way that science will, I believe, find answers to the causes of global warming, so too will technology find answers to any possible future service degradation.

  • Ben, I agreed with what unreasonable men said, and that is, the state should get out of the way and leave businesses alone so they can get on with making money. Too much legislations here and there.
