The changes impinging on the enterprise – an economic crisis, a more mobile workforce and a whole host of new tools and processes – has led to a burgeoning of the “remote workforce”. Increasing smart phone adoption (up 50% in Q1 2010), ubiquitous connectivity, and an understanding of the value of giving employees freedom means that workers are no longer tied to their desks. In fact, reading tweets from my colleagues (admittedly an unscientific approach that is skewed towards the “early adopter”) shows people working from a myriad of places – home, cafes, while commuting, and even (thanks to the airlines) at 30,000 feet.
