I received an email this morning from Ebay (who has almost no presence in New Zealand due to the massive incumbency of TradeMe) inviting me to use Gumtree, a regionalised free classified site.

I went and had a look and can report that it seems Craig (of list fame) has taken to tree climing! It seems like a simple, primarily text based classified site. Just a couple of questions;

  • The gumtree is an Australian native – seems a somewhat incongruous name for a NZ regional website
  • Can anyone really hope to compete with an incumbent that boasts most of NZ’s domestic web traffic
