Andy Lark pointed me in the direction of this. It’s a new mobile from T-Mobile that is pure mobile when out and about, but when within range of a WiFi spot it gives the caller free calls routed through 802.11.

Part of the deal gives the user a free wireless hub for home (so you’ve got free VOIP whenever at home) and given the proliferation of WiFi stateside, it’s a fair bet that a significant number of a users calls will be gratis.

It costs USD10 per month on top of a voice plan – but this gives you a free tricky wireless modem that has some advantages of normal ones;

  • it prioritises voice rather than data packets
  • it has one button push encryption
  • it extends the mobile’s battery life

Good idea I reckon – now if only they could steal some hype from Apple…..
