Phil Wainewright has this excellent post over on ZDNet where he coins the acronym SoSaaS, standing for “Same old Software, as a service”.

In his post he differentiates between true SaaS products which are engineered from the ground up to be delivered in the SaaS format, and SoSaaS offerings which are merely traditional client/server apps that are streamed over the web.

Phil is dead right – worryingly some enterprise software companies are going down the application service provider (ASP) route of old. This is where an off the shelf box software product is ported down the web.

It’s slow, it’s inefficient, it doesn’t take advantage of all that web 2.0 can offer and it’s doomed to failure

Simple as that
